Practice Philosophy

Our philosophy is that the care we provide should meet your unique, individual needs.

With a long and established career, having worked in both rural environments and busy, cosmopolitan cities, I have a wealth of experience seeing and treating people from diverse backgrounds, cultures and perspectives.

With a focus on clinical excellence, and bringing my extensive experience, I will provide you with exceptional care, whatever your hand and wrist problem may be.

I understand how important receiving timely, personalised care is for you, and promise to tailor your treatment to your personal story, paying close attention to your specific history, lifestyle and goals.

My team is committed to providing you with an outstanding experience and to making it as easy as possible for you to access the right treatment for your condition. With prompt and attentive communication, we will guide you through your entire journey, from initial enquiry, through to consultation, treatment and aftercare.

We use a secure software platform Carebit to keep all your records securely in one place, so that you can see your results, reports and clinical letters as soon as they are available.

I believe that your healthcare is a partnership between us, and I want you to have the peace of mind that I am truly invested in your wellbeing.

Enquiries

We appreciate that choosing the right provider is a big decision. You may have many questions, perhaps about the logistics of private healthcare, your particular condition, or maybe about the available treatments.

Our website is designed to give you a helpful look into our practice and the patient experience. Please feel free to contact us if you need more clarity or wish to discuss how we can help. We make it a priority to get back to you as quickly as possible.

Referrals

I am happy to see patients without a formal referral, provided the condition is within my scope of practice.

Please contact my secretary for any clarification for your specific circumstances or to check that I can manage your condition.

Please note: Some private medical insurers require a referral before they will authorise cover. I recommend checking your policy details and obtaining an authorisation code before booking.

How to Book

There are several ways to book an appointment with me. Please choose the option that best suits your needs.

Direct via Hospital

For initial consultations, you may book directly through the hospital systems.

Navigate to the Locations page, or click here.

We will then contact you to confirm details.

Follow-up Appointments: Please note that all follow-up clinic appointments must be booked via my secretary.

What happens next?

Once booked, you will receive a confirmation email and a “CMA” letter. Please read this carefully as it contains important information we are required to give you before your appointment.

You will also be granted access to your Patient Portal to view results, share photographs, and complete digital consent forms or questionnaires to help us provide the best possible care.

Your Consultation

Please arrive at least 15 minutes early for your first appointment.

The hospital may ask you to complete a registration form or provide additional details upon check-in.

Please note: Whilst I strive to remain on schedule, the nature of a medical clinic means that some consultations may take longer than expected.

If you have been waiting longer than expected, please let a nurse know so they can provide an updated waiting time.

During the consultation, we will have the opportunity to discuss your condition and concerns in detail. Following a clinical examination, we will discuss your diagnosis and all available treatment options.

Sometimes there is a lot of information, and it can be overwhelming. If you have a complex condition, I encourage you to bring someone with you for support.

There is never any pressure to choose a treatment immediately; if you need time to consider your options, we can easily arrange a second consultation to answer further questions.

I will provide you with the very best advice possible, so you feel completely confident that you can make the decision that is right for you.

Further Investigations

Sometimes, further investigations are required to help plan the right treatment for you. These are typically carried out by specialised departments:
  • Radiology: X-rays, Ultrasounds, CT, or MRI scans
  • Neurophysiology: Nerve conduction tests (e.g. for Carpal Tunnel)
These tests usually need to be scheduled for a separate date. The relevant department will contact you directly to arrange your appointment.
Next Steps: Once your tests are complete, please contact my secretary to schedule a follow-up consultation. This allows us to discuss the results and finalize your treatment plan.

Your Treatment Plan

Once we have a diagnosis, I will discuss the treatment options specifically tailored to you. Generally, these fall into the following categories:

In many cases, surgery is not required. Management may include reassurance, simple home-based measures, or a referral to a Specialist Hand Therapist for splinting, exercises, and professional advice. Alternatively, you may benefit from a steroid injection or a ganglion aspiration. Depending on complexity, these can often be performed during your clinic visit.
Small surgical procedures can often be performed in dedicated procedure rooms within the outpatient clinic. If appropriate, we may be able to do this on the same day as your consultation; otherwise, we will arrange a convenient future date.
More significant operations are performed in an operating theatre. You will be able to return home the same day. We will discuss the best anaesthetic option for you:
  • Local Anaesthetic: Numbing injections at the site (with or without sedation).
  • Regional Anaesthetic: Your whole arm is numbed by a Consultant Anaesthetist, but you remain awake.
  • General Anaesthetic: You will be asleep for the duration of the procedure.
The hospital will arrange a pre-operative assessment beforehand to ensure you are medically fit for surgery.
For more complex cases, you may need to stay in the hospital for one or more nights. These procedures usually require a general anaesthetic. We will discuss the details of your stay and recovery extensively beforehand so you know exactly what to expect. If anything remains unclear, please reach out and I will answer any further questions.

Recovery & Aftercare

Your recovery is just as important as the procedure itself. To ensure the best possible outcome, we provide a structured aftercare plan tailored to your specific treatment.

Before you leave the hospital, you will be provided with clear instructions regarding:
  • Wound Care: Keeping your dressing clean and dry, and when any stitches will need to be removed.
  • Pain Management: A plan for medication to keep you comfortable during the initial healing phase.
  • Elevation & Movement: Advice on how to position your hand or wrist to reduce swelling.
For many hand and wrist procedures, specialized rehabilitation is key to regaining strength and flexibility. If required, I will coordinate your care with a Specialist Hand Therapist. They will guide you through tailored exercises and provide custom splints if necessary to protect your repair while it heals.
Usually we will arrange a dressing clinic appointment to review your wound, remove any stitches, and replace the dressing if required. This will usually be 7-10 days after your procedure. I will see you for at least one follow-up consultation to monitor your progress, review your healing, and adjust your rehabilitation plan if necessary. The timing of this depends on your procedure, but it is typically scheduled 2 to 4 weeks after surgery.
If you have any concerns during your recovery—such as unexpected pain, swelling, or questions about your dressings—please reach out immediately.
You can contact my secretary or the hospital ward where you were treated; we are here to support you every step of the way.

Potential Complications

The vast majority of procedures that I perform are successful and uncomplicated, but all surgery carries some degree of risk. I will run through any specific risks with you at your appointment.

These are risks associated with almost any surgical procedure:
  • Infection: Small risk of wound infection, usually treatable with antibiotics.
  • Scarring: All incisions leave a scar, which may be tender or firm initially but usually softens over time.
  • Swelling & Bruising: Normal after surgery, managed with elevation and rest.
  • Bleeding: Minor oozing is common; significant bleeding is rare.
Surgery of the hand involves delicate structures. Specific risks can include:
  • Stiffness: The most common issue. Early hand therapy is designed to prevent this.
  • Nerve Irritation: Numbness or tingling near the scar site, usually temporary.
  • Tendon Adhesions: Where internal scarring limits the “glide” of the tendons.
  • CRPS: A rare condition (Complex Regional Pain Syndrome) causing prolonged pain and swelling.
Your safety is the priority. We take several steps to reduce these risks: I use meticulous surgical techniques, sterile equipment and environments, and work closely with experienced Hand Therapists to ensure your recovery is as safe as possible with the best outcome. I will discuss the specific risks related to your particular procedure in detail during your consent process.
Please contact us immediately if you experience any of the following after surgery:
  • Significantly increasing pain not relieved by medication.
  • Spreading redness or heat around the dressing.
  • Sudden, excessive swelling or foul-smelling discharge.
  • High fever or feeling generally unwell.

Continued Care & Reviews

Managing a hand or wrist condition is often a journey rather than a single event. My commitment to your care continues well beyond the initial treatment phase.

For long-term conditions—such as arthritis or certain nerve-related issues—treatment is focused on maintaining function and managing symptoms over time. I will remain involved for as long as necessary to ensure you are supported.
Health needs can change. Even if it has been months or years since your last appointment, I am always happy to see you again. If a previously treated condition flares up or a new concern arises, I can perform a full re-assessment to discuss updated management options.
You do not need to wait for a scheduled appointment if you feel your condition requires attention. Please feel free to reach out to my secretary at any time in the future to arrange a review.
Note: Depending on the time elapsed since your last visit, a new GP referral may occasionally be required for insurance purposes, but we can advise you on this when you contact us.

Funding Your Care

I am committed to providing clear and transparent information regarding the costs of your consultation and treatment, whether you are using private insurance or paying for your own care.

I am a recognized provider for most major private medical insurers, including: BUPA, WPA, AXA, Vitality, Allianz, and Aviva. To ensure a smooth experience, my secretary will need the following information before your appointment:
  • Your Insurance Provider name.
  • Your Membership or Policy Number.
  • A Pre-authorisation Number for the consultation.
If surgery is required, I will provide you with the specific clinical procedure codes (CCSD codes) so you can obtain the necessary pre-authorisation from your insurer beforehand.
I am very happy to see patients who wish to fund their own treatment. I believe in total fee transparency so that you can make informed decisions without surprises.
I will provide a clear breakdown of my professional fees for consultations and procedures. For surgical cases, the hospital will also provide a “fixed-price” quote covering their facility fees, nursing care, and any required implants.
My secretary is experienced in dealing with insurance companies and hospital billing departments. If you have any questions regarding invoices or the pre-authorisation process, please contact us for assistance.
